Legal in Lincoln

Many boating  bloggers after a day in Lincoln would be posting accounts and pictures of visits to the cathedral and castle and whatever other fine buildings this handsome city possesses. But you can read about those elsewhere and there's nothing I can say that hasn't been said a hundred times before.

Instead, here's a picture of my favourite building in Lincoln. For some time I've been keeping a list (an imaginary list, I'm not that nerdy) of Chinese take-aways with amusing names.  I've found "Shun Fat" in Herefordshire and "Po Sing" in Grantham, but here's my all-time favourite

I first noticed it when I visited the city over thirty years ago and I'm glad to see it's still going strong. I can never decide whether the owner consulted a Chinese-English dictionary to find a word that meant something like, good, wholesome or honest or whether that first "L" should, in the Chinese way, really be an "R"!

I've seen another recently, in Shaftesbury, Dorset, to give you the general idea:

In our yoof Jayne and I used to visit a Curry House in Sutton Coldfield known locally as the Alsatian Grill.

There was a Chinese takeaway near where we used to live called 'So-So', which never seemed like a ringing endorsement.

Years ago I used to work in Singapore. One day a chinese funeral caught my eye - on the side of the lorry (yes, that's what they used for a hearse) was the sign:
"Goh Soon - Undertaker"
